Some serious Detroit muscle by the name of NOMO is swinging into town, and you'd better not miss it. Specializing in raw and ragged Afro-beat in the free tradition, these kids play from the gut until their brass fuzzes out just as much as their bass. Sure, any band who namechecks Sun Ra sideman Phil Cohran, beat-seductress M.I.A. and inside-outsider Harry Partch in its bio is either a bunch of jerks or a gang of geniuses who don't know how hip they are. But throw in His Name Is Alive's Warn DeFever as a producer, and you end up with a group that's funky as all get out, as soulful as it is weird. Oh, and one that puts on one hell of a show.
