No Brainer

While not the most aesthetically pleasing creatures, zombies are certainly works of art -- albeit the bloody, rotting, cannibalistic variety. Their origin stories are creative landscapes (radiation! a government conspiracy! a virus!) and modern zombies are perfected for the screen with hours of laborious, artful makeup application. They've infected movies, comic books, classic works of literature, television -- myriad storytellers have acknowledged the powerful way these mindless human bodies can teach us brain-having humans about ourselves. Student artists at University of Missouri-St. Louis have channeled the expressive potential within these flesh-eaters, creating zombie-inspired works for Expired, a collective show exploring and celebrating the undead. The opening reception takes place from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, October 6, at Gallery Visio on the UMSL campus (1 University Drive at Natural Bridge Road; 314-516-7922 or www.umsl.edu/~galvisio), with food and Halloween-themed music. The gallery is open Monday through Thursday, and the show runs through Monday, October 31.
Mondays-Thursdays. Starts: Oct. 6. Continues through Oct. 31, 2011
