New Start, New Space

There's a perceptible air of excitement at each art opening that even serial gallerygoers feel. Maybe it's all of the creativity in the air, or perhaps the artist is projecting his or her exhilaration/relief/happiness onto the crowd. Whatever it is, we bet that the thrill felt at this weekend's opening at the Abstrakt Art Gallery (1902 Arsenal Street; will be even more intense than at most such events. For starters the art space is brand-new, flinging wide its doors for the first time from 8 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, June 6. On that night you'll have the opportunity to view the work of Paco Rosic, an artist who fled from Sarajevo to Germany and eventually to Waterloo, Iowa, where he has opened a restaurant and perfected his aerosol painting technique, serving as a true example of the American dream. His works have the haziness of watercolors but with a depth and saturation of color; subjects can range from a seductive woman to a picturesque cityscape. At the opening reception, drinks will be flowing — it is an opening, after all — and entertainment is promised. Plus, proceeds from sales will benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
