Moves from the Mississippi

When you think of dancing music, the blues might not be the first thing that comes to mind. But choreographer Gina Patterson heard something else in blues standards such as "St. James Infirmary" and "Stop Your Dogging." She heard the sound of people on the move, traveling up and down the rivers to play these songs in days gone by. St. Louis was one of those river towns, shaped as much by the passage of the water as by the musicians who came through or settled down to stay. Patterson's new dance piece, Liquid Roads, celebrates this musical heritage, combining the sounds of '20s and '30s jazz and blues standards with new songs, all performed by live musicians for the talented MADCO dance corps. MADCO dances the 90-minute show at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday (April 11 and 12) at the Touhill Performing Arts Center (1 University Boulevard at Natural Bridge Road; 314-516-4949 or Local band the Sidney Street Shakers performs before and after the show, which wraps up with an ice-cream social.
