Modern Problems

The Modern Times satirized in Charlie Chaplin's iconic 1936 comedy don't look so modern anymore. Factories have all but vanished from the American landscape, and you'd never get away with that mustache these days. But as a comment on economic desperation, it's right on time. The Tivoli Theatre (6350 Delmar Boulevard, University City) is showing Modern Times tonight at 7 p.m. for the recession-friendly price of free, as a companion to Lunch Break, the current exhibit at the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum (1 Brookings Drive). That show features photographer Sharon Lockhart's images of workers on break at a Maine ironworks. As Modern Times heralded the dawn of the mass-production age, Lockhart captures its twilight. Spoiler alert: It's not anywhere near as funny. See or call 314-935-4523 for details.
