"Modern Man" tells the story of one man's search for meaning. The man lives alone on a large estate. He cleans the pool, sweeps the tennis court, repairs lighting fixtures, and changes the trash. He gathers a collection of small rocks. He places them on a slate fragment and positions them around a lamppost. He knocks a greenhouse thermometer off its hook. He plays with a stray tennis ball. He stomps on a tangled garden hose. Next, the man ascends a large tree and stands on one of its perches. He raises his arms to the sky. He wraps a globe with duct tape. He caresses an orchid. He spends the night staring into glowing lampposts. He waters the garden. After that, the man puts both hands on a shovel and digs. He unearths a fragment of petrified wood. He studies the dirt-covered artifact. Finally, the man goes into his house. He mounts stairs and finds a wall of photographs. The man sees a picture of himself as a child. He removes it from the wall, wraps it in cloth, and buries it in a trunk. Subsequently, the man resumes work and play.
