Midsummer's Screeve

Like so many things of beauty, chalk art fades much too quickly, a lesson we all learned long ago when watching Bert's lovely Technicolor pictures get washed away in Mary Poppins. Of course, that's not the only take-away from that part of the musical. That scene taught us the importance of making the most of the moment and enjoying its beauty and magic as much as possible (well, that, and that British nannies make life a jolly holiday, another valuable fact). Anywho, back to the chalk art and living in the moment. The Delmar Loop presents just such an opportunity with Get Your Chalk On!, the district's first-ever chalk festival. Artists of all ages receive supplies and a patch of concrete on which to create their masterpieces, all of which only will survive beyond a few days through photographs. Yet despite their lack of permanence, these artworks demand to be created! To get in on the fun and, erm, get your chalk on, as it were, sign up at www.visittheloop.com; registration fees range from $2 (for the little ones) to $10 (for adults). Check-in starts at 9 a.m. by Fitz's American Grill & Bottling Works (6605 Delmar Boulevard, University City), and prizes are awarded toward the end of the day.
