Meshuggah

Sunday, November 6; Pop's (1403 Mississippi Avenue, Sauget, Illinois)

Unlike many of their countrymen, Sweden's Meshuggah are not Viking metalheads -- unless you consider them highly evolved Vikings who ride around in starships marauding the galaxy. For proof, just check out the quartet's latest release, Catch Thirty-Three, a futuristic-sounding record that demands that you sit down and listen to it in its near-50-minute entirety. But don't be scared away: Meshuggah keeps the pace up with devastating math-metal riffs and twists, feral vocals, cool effects and programmed tribal rhythms that actually feel remarkably organic and alive. They crossed an ocean and a galaxy or two to get to you, so return the favor and cross the Mississippi River to witness the sci-fi slaughter.

Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15; call 618-274-6720 for more information.
