Even in his children's stories, author Roald Dahl never spoke down to his audience. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Fantastic Mr. Fox and James and the Giant Peach are light on sentiment, heavy on black humor and above all, respectful of children's intelligence. In the Tony Award-winning musical based on his 1988 novel Matilda, none of the adults recognize the intellectual prowess of Dahl's young protagonist until she befriends her teacher, Miss Honey, and through the power of telekinesis and a spunky spirit, takes her destiny in her own hands. Matilda: The Musical is performed at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, and at 1 and 6:30 p.m. Sunday (October 21 through November 1) at the Fox Theatre (527 North Grand Boulevard; 314-534-1111 or www.fabulousfox.com). Tickets are $25 to $88.
