Love Him Now

If playing rock & roll well is difficult enough, writing well about rock might be harder. Good rock-music writing is nearly always the province of the review, the essay or the biography; it isn't often attempted by A-list novelists. Jonathan Lethem, however, seems intent on a new-school mash-up. With "The Beards," his 2005 essay in The New Yorker, Lethem executed one of the best pieces of writing on music anyone's likely to achieve, and now he aims the mic at LA's alterna-scene in his brand-new novel, You Don't Love Me Yet. The story follows Lucinda Hoekke, bassist in a going-nowhere band, as she gets to know — and soon falls in love with — a character dubbed the Complainer, whose enigmatic influence serves to jump-start her moribund band.
