Look at that Piggy in the Mirror

Everyone is so damaged, their interpersonal webs so tangled (particularly in the Lou, America's biggest small town), it is astounding that any two folks get together at all, much less manage to make it work. HotCity Theatre looks to the topic of “making it work” with its production of Neil LaBute's play, Fat Pig. LaBute made his name with the uber-dark play In the Company of Men (later a film, as well), and has consistently produced work which unflinchingly peers into the ugly places of human interaction. Fat Pig finds a man tumbling into love with a plus-sized woman, much to the dismay and disparagement of his friends. Lots sniping ensues, mostly on the topic of what is beautiful and what is ugly – especially in terms of the human interior. Fat Pig plays at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and at 7 p.m. Sunday (September 7 through 22) at the ArtLoft Theatre (1529 Washington Avenue; 314-289-4060 or www.hotcitytheatre.org).
