Livin' at the Movies

Moving to a new state is difficult enough when you're a teenager, but for Ernestine Crump and her smart-mouthed younger sister Ermina, their change of scenery comes with the burden of grief. Their mother has recently died, and their father, Godfrey, uproots the family from Pensacola to Brooklyn in order to be closer to the ministry of his spiritual guide, Father Divine. Ernestine comes to realize that her father, despite being a responsible adult, is struggling to accept the loss of his wife — real life isn't like the movies Ernestine uses as an escape from her own worries, and the answers aren't found in 90 minutes. Lynn Nottage's Crumbs from the Table of Joy captures that strange moment when you discover your parents have their own weaknesses and troubles. Mustard Seed Theatre opens its fourth season with Crumbs from the Table of Joy at 8 p.m. Friday, August 27.
