Little Festival on the Prairie

For many of us, the closest we'll ever get to prairie life involves fond memories of playing The Oregon Trail; unfortunately, we never reached Oregon, having drowned while fording a river in our wagon or succumbing to the evils of dysentery. Luckily, Shaw Nature Reserve's Prairie Day, held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will give us a second chance to discover the wonders of the prairie. Take nature hikes through the 250-acre tallgrass prairie, explore a sod house and a teepee, or interact with candle-makers, blacksmiths and other craftsman. While the string band plays, you can also explore animal exhibits, purchase wildflowers and seeds, or sink your teeth into a delicious bison burger. Admission is $3; kids twelve and younger get in free. Shaw Nature Reserve is located in Gray Summit, just off Interstate 44's exit 253.
