Let Every Dog Have this Day

Tell your dog that this week's spreadsheets are gonna look a touch skimpy, and he'll most likely cock his head to the side and wag his tail, or perhaps his entire back end. Sit your dog down to let him know that as a cost-cutting measure you'll be switching to the generic dog food, and he's liable to climb into your lap and knock your hand with his head. Dogs, you see, are geniuses — underperformance, bad news and uncertainty don't mean anything to them. Just fill the bowl, throw the stick and let them have the foot of the bed and they think the world is perfect. Learn from these Zen masters of life whenever you can. Say, for instance, at today's Canine Carnival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Tilles Park (9551 Litzsinger Road, Ladue; www.apamo.org). The annual Animal Protective Association celebration of the doggy lifestyle opens with the crowning of a Canine King and Queen, who then get to lead the Pooch Parade. Other activities include a pet fashion show (courtesy of Lola & Penelope's Pet Boutique), performances by the Purina Incredible Dog Team and various contests for your dog to enter, such as best kisser, best singer and best costume. There is no best advice category, because dogs all give the same great advice. Admission to the carnival is free.
