Kool & the Gang

8:30 p.m. Friday, June 15. Saint Louis Zoo, 1 Government Drive (in Forest Park).

With veteran funkateers Kool & the Gang signed on to headline Zoofari, the Saint Louis Zoo's annual black-tie fundraiser, the big question is: How many "Jungle Boogie" references can one city endure? (Sincere apologies for adding to the onslaught.) However, the inevitable airing of that 1974 smash will only be the tip of the nostalgia iceberg. The Gang, now approaching its sixth decade together, has weathered every R&B trend since disco. And the group can draw on a seemingly bottomless reserve of good-feeling soul hits from across the years — the equally inescapable party-starter "Celebration" among them.
