Kiszka Me Goodnight

At night the dreams of kiszka return. Kiszka stacked like cordwood in the backyard, kiszka falling out of the pantry, kiszka being delivered by a liveried courier on the hour -- these are not the dreams of a sane man. Should the humble Polish sausage inspire such obsession? You’d know yourself if you’d ever had kiszka so hot it burns your soft palate, so spiced you can taste it hours later with every exhaled breath. The Polish Falcon Festival, a two-day celebration of Polska food and conviviality, takes place this Friday and Saturday (September 7 and 8) at Polish Falcon Gardens (2013 St. Louis Avenue; 314-421-9614). Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, and dinner is from 4 to 7:30 p.m.; best to just sit tight between those meals, so as to not lose your place. You can enjoy the music of Chicago’s Downtown Sound and maybe have a beer -- we hear it goes well with kiszka. But save room for Saturday: Lunch is served from noon to 7 p.m., and you’ll need every minute to live your kiszka dreams. Admission is free, but food and drink require a bit of cash.
