Kinky Friedman

When: Thu., May 11, 7 p.m. 2017

Kinky Friedman has done a little bit of everything during his long and colorful career. He's written some detective novels, he's run for a political office or two, and he's written a couple songs. In the old days he'd have been called a "troubadour;" these days he's stuck with "media personality," although "wiseacre" may be closer to the mark. Nobody as one-dimensional as a media personality could write something as poignant as "Nashville Casualty and Life," and then follow it up with the over-the-top machismo of "Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in the Bed." The last time Friedman played St. Louis he sold out Off Broadway. This go-round he'll set up in the cozy environs of Joe's Cafe (6014 Kingsbury Avenue; 314-667-4208). Tickets are $25, and according to Joe's handyman, there are plenty left for walk-ups and last-minute arrivals. The show starts at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 11, and nobody will be allowed in after 8:30 p.m.
