Kings Go Forth is built on a simple proposition: the more the funkier. The ten-member, Milwaukee-based band throws itself into a whirlwind of rhythm and horn lines while dragging obscure, soul-man Black Wolf crooning and wailing behind it. With an uncanny approximation of blissed-out, Chi-Lite-esque harmonies, rippling bongos and a bass- and kick-drum so heavy and deep the Macondo well couldn't suck them dry, the band's 2010 album, The Outsiders Are Back, overcomes its obsessively vintage sound and cobbled-together sequence. As a collection of singles dating back to 2007, it's a document of all that's best about the soul revival: unironic hooks, fervent singing and a beat that wrecks the street. Will the modest Off Broadway stage hold up when Kings Go Forth hold forth? One way to find out.
