Katie Herzig

8 p.m. Saturday, June 18. Old Rock House, 1200 South Seventh Street.

Turn on the television, and there's a good chance you'll hear Katie Herzig. From her appearances in a Target commercial last spring featuring her snappy single "Hey Na Na" to a handful of songs in Grey's Anatomy and lots of soundtrack appearances in between, hers is a unique voice, too often hidden in the scenery. A singer, songwriter and guitarist, Herzig's based in Nashville, but she defies Music Row's rules. Pop hooks marry folk melodies, all with Herzig's voice that veers from breathy longing to kitschy, affected accents, with instrumentation that pairs acoustic guitar with cellos. Herzig's next album, The Walking Sleep, is scheduled to be released in September. The first single, "Make a Noise" indicates she's moving away from her countrified origins and into more complex and atmospheric realms. It's time to turn off the television and see an artist who deserves more than being relegated to a drama's background noise.
