J Mascis and the Fog

Attention, indie-rock nation: On March 26, you should sleep later than usual, start the afternoon with a big bowl of cereal, follow it up with a bigger bowl of chiba, don your finest ceremonial garb (thrift-store Dickies, gas-station-attendant shirt, toque, chain wallet, Chuck Taylors) and then make the processional down to Blueberry Hill to celebrate the return of the Once and Future King, J "Dinosaur Jr." Mascis. Drummer, golfer, TV watcher, reclusive genius who plays the guitar as if he's still playing drums, J Mascis is all things slack and distorted. His latest album, More Light, is as much a solo effort as the last four or five Dino releases were, but More Light is his strongest, most consistently brilliant batch of songs since his subtle epic Where You Been. From the loping fuzz chords of "Where'd You Go" to "Ammaring"'s empty-another-bottle-and-dance-with-her-picture longing to "More Light's" shimmering wall of blare that leaps and flickers like liquid fire, J seduces you once again with heavily amped guitars and his tender, quivering heart.

Joining King Mascis for this tour is none other than Uncle Mike Watt and his fantabulous thunderbroom. Watt has been known to play lead bass, rhythm bass, backing bass, punk bass, funk bass, invisible bass and, of course, econo-bass, and he's the also the reigning heavyweight champ of the BOC (Bass Oyster Cult). If you were rocked by Watt's last appearance here, you know he's capable of playing some unusual covers ("Little Johnny Jewel," "The Blue Mask," "Fear Is a Man's Best Friend"), as well as the odd Minutemen classic. Is it too much to expect Watt and Mascis to tackle "Maggot Brain" again? Maybe if we ask nicely ... oh, what the hell. Just scream for it between songs. Nobody's gonna hear you over J's Fender.
