It's A Tradition


Tevye the milkman has a tough life, but you don't hear him complain. His community and his strong Jewish faith keep him grounded, even in the tumult of 1905 Russia. The Czar may call for pogroms, but Tevye has thousands of years of tradition to back him up, symbolized by the fiddler. Even as the world grinds down the weak and the angry, the joy embodied in the fiddler remind Tevye that life is good. Unfortunately, his five daughters seem to be drifting away from that tradition. As each of them grows older and discovers love, the old ways of matchmakers and arranged marriages crumble. What's a poor milkman supposed to do in the face of powerful forces such as love and war? Stages St. Louis closes out its season with the perennial favorite, Fiddler on the Roof. The show is performed at 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 4 and 8 p.m. Saturday, 2 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday (September 5 through October 5) at the Robert G. Reim Theatre (111 South Geyer Road, Kirkwood; 314-821-2407 or Tickets are $20 to $57.
