Isley Brothers

8 p.m. Friday, April 20. Fox Theatre (527 North Grand Boulevard).

Don't count Ronald Isley out just yet — even if he's dealt with a stroke, a bout with kidney cancer and a prison sentence for tax evasion in the past few years. Somehow, despite all this drama, Isley's also staged a late-career comeback, one owing largely to his partnership with R. Kelly and the creation of Isley's pimptastic alter-ego, Mr. Biggs. The pair's collaborations, particularly 2003's Body Kiss, proved that Ron can sing Kelly's often-absurd lyrics and make them work; on "Lucky Charm," Mr. Biggs compares his lady to a bowl of cereal, while "What Would You Do?" allows ladies the opportunity to envision themselves as Mrs. Biggs. These songs are built on a fantasy of smooth grooves and endless sex appeal, but damned if it isn't a fun ride. This concert is billed as the Isley Brothers, (although only Ron and guitarist Ernie remain of the original six), but expect Mr. Biggs to be holding court most of the night.
