Into the Wild Blue Yonder

A standout filmmaker in his day, Derek Jarman's brilliant introspective film Blue was simple in its execution but evokes complex emotions. Aware that he was seriously ill with complications from HIV/AIDS and that this would be his last film, Jarman remained staunchly unconventional in his approach to leaving a final testament. The only image in the film is the color blue, which fills the screen. Narration provided by friends and colleagues including Tilda Swinton, John Quentin, Nigel Terry and Jarman himself guides the viewer through the incredibly personal story of Jarman's experience with losing his sight, his life and everything he had made. The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (3750 Washington Boulevard; 314-535-4660 or presents a free screening of Blue at 8 p.m. tonight in the courtyard it shares with the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts.
