In the Words of Warriors

America has more new veterans of foreign wars every day, but those soldiers' experiences tend to remain unspoken. Many vets don't want to burden noncombatants with the harsh truth of modern warfare, but bottling up their feelings isn't always the healthiest route. Writing down their stories allows soldiers to process the complexities of returning to normal life, and it helps civilians understand better what it means to serve. Southeast Missouri State University Press publishes these writings in the anthology series Proud to Be: Writing by American Warriors. Today at 12:15 p.m. a group of local veterans share their stories and poems at "In Their Own Words" in room 402 of the J.C. Penney Conference Center on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus (1 University Boulevard at Natural Bridge Road; 314-516-5698). Admission is free, and volumes one and two of the Proud to Be series will be available for purchase.
