In the Cathedral's Shadow

We party

A quiet solemnity surrounds the cathedrals that dot our cityscape. These holy spots are often places for tranquil contemplation and reflection, though occasional doses of joy can certainly be found within their walls. The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis (4431 Lindell Boulevard; www.cathedralstl.org 314-373-8200) is no exception. This majestic stone structure with its emerald roof helps anchor the neighborhood and provide a place of quietude — even during Cathedralfete. At this annual old-timey fair, held on the church's grounds, bands play, Schlafly beer is poured, a pig is roasted, and other food is served (including homemade sweets). Plus, there are activities for the kids, a craft fair and a pet parade! The raucous party runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and if during that time you're looking for a little peace and quiet, head inside the church for a free tour.
