In Memoriam

They served, you honor

Author Tom Ruck (pictured) pays his respects to national cemeteries across the country — like our own Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery (where Ruck's parents are buried) — in his book, Sacred Ground: A Tribute to America's Veterans. By pairing images of these final resting spots with text from folks such as Buzz Aldrin, Dennis Miller, Bob Hope and others, Ruck is able to capture the cemeteries' sense of honorific stillness — and our tremendous gratitude. Ruck, who grew up in St. Louis, donates all royalties from his book to the Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund for the children of disabled or deceased service men and women. In honor of Memorial Day, Ruck will be signing his book from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, at the Borders in Sunset Hills.
