In Dreams Begin Responsibility

comment
Dreams, one of Akira Kurosawa's final films, fittingly closes out the Webster Film Series' crucial "Kurosawa at 100" program. A compilation of vignettes that touch upon those subjects nearest to Kurosawa's heart -- the dangers of the atomic age, the spiritual and psychic toll of war, the importance of nature -- Dreams also stars some of the most brilliant and breathtaking visuals of the great director's long career. Kurosawa's eyesight was failing him at this point in his life, but don't attribute his gauzy imagery to bad eyes; for most of his career, Kurosawa shot what he felt in his heart, and that organ never proved him false. Dreams screens at 7:30 p.m. this evening at Webster University's Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood Avenue; 314-968-7487 or www.webster.edu/filmseries). Tickets are $5 to $6.
