If the Silver Pieces Number 30, You Know He's Dirty

It was either the Menendez case or the OJ Simpson case — or maybe Col. Mustard in the atrium with the bookcase — that officially wore out the cliché "trial of the century." Sure, they were all high-profile proceedings with big names and scandalous details, but all of them are out-watted in terms of star-power and scandal by HotCity Theatre's The Last Days of Judas Iscariot. Stephen Adly Guirgis' off-Broadway phenomenon tackles the case of the man who gave betrayal a name and a price. Judas is trapped in Purgatory, attempting to appeal his way out of what stands to be a stiff sentence. Things are, as you might imagine, going poorly for him. Pontius Pilate is a character witness, but he's invoking the Fifth Amendment; Satan is more than happy to testify on Judas' behalf, however. Right, when Satan is your character witness, that's when you have a chance. The Last Days of Judas Iscariot is the courtroom procedural where Scripture is evidence, pleas are couched in modern slang, and the surprise witness is infallible — but is he really big on the prosecution of any soul? It's the trial of two-plus millennia, and tickets are only $15 to $20! HotCity presents The Last Days of Judas Iscariot at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and at 7 p.m. Sunday (September 7 through 23) at the ArtLoft Theatre (1529 Washington Avenue; 314-289-4063 or www.hotcitytheatre.org).
Thursdays-Sundays. Starts: Sept. 7. Continues through Sept. 23
