Homslice: Earthworms

No Arms, No Legs, Just a Head and a Body (Frozen Food Section)

Blunt-wielding-yet-sensitive hippity-hoppers Earthworms are Black Patrick, DJ Mahf, Mathias and Kama (the last two are fresh from the ashes of Core Project, winner of the 2005 Riverfront Times Music Award for Best Hip-Hop Artist). In part because of Mahf's precision-perfect scratches and Mathias' stepped-up rhymes, No Arms, No Legs, Just a Head and a Body gels instantly with sing-along hooks over luscious melodies. But the album's secret weapon is its beats, produced mainly by the talented Capo (of Perfect Strangers) and Mike Stahl, a.k.a. EngLebuRt. The 27-year-old Stahl is the best-kept secret in local hip-hop, largely because he spends most of his time fixing computers on Air Force bases around the nation. But the Belleville resident's military duties don't stop him from crafting ridonkulous beats, and No Arms is a perfect platform for them. The disc is available at local indie record stores, thefrozenfoodsection.com and Star Clipper Comics on the Loop. (If you buy it at Star Clipper, you'll get a free comic book by DJ Mahf's older brother, Jim Mahfood, a St. Louis native who did the album's cover art.)
