Here’s Your French Connection

The French have a certain style; it’s an intuitive Frenchness, something so indescribable and yet recognizable that there’s even a term for it: Je ne sais quoi one mutters around a smoldering Gitane Brune, before tossing back a drink and pinching the waitress on the tush. French bread, French doors, French kissing -- these are the little pleasures of life. And what could be more sais quoi than a little French music? The Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra celebrates the Gallic way of life with the first installment of this year’s Classical Detours Series, French-Style. Conductor David Robertson presents an hour-long program of music by the great French composers (perhaps a little Debussy? Maybe some Berlioz?) interspersed with anecdotes about the musicians and the works themselves (now, we really hope there’s some Berlioz) at 6:30 p.m. at Powell Symphony Hall (718 North Grand Boulevard; 314-534-1700 or www.slso.org). Tickets are $20 to $30, so it’s a fantastic way for the novice to dip a toe in the classical waters, so to speak, or for the experienced Powell habitué to enjoy a quick hit of something heady. Berets are optional, but early arrival is mandatory -- there’s a pre-concert bar to help you ease into your français, and you don’t want to miss that. On a soif, Maestro.
