Hendrix on Lincoln

Artist John Hendrix has an affinity for historical figures. He's illustrated children's books about abolitionist John Brown, the U.S. presidents, Civil War spy Sarah Edmonds and Abraham Lincoln. So of course Hendrix would join forces with the University City Public Library (6701 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-727-3150 or during its monthlong educational exhibition, Lincoln: the Constitution and the Civil War. The almost-dissolution of the American government is a bit of a downer, so Hendrix's work, which hangs in the library's gallery, provides a colorful and youthful counterpoint to the serious business addressed in the main show. Hendrix visits the library from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, August 10, for a reception and book signing, with Subterranean Books handling onsite book sales. Both shows remain on display through Friday, August 29, and the library is open daily. Admission is free.
Sun., Aug. 10, 2-5 p.m.; Mondays-Fridays, 9 a.m.-9 p.m.; Saturdays, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sundays, 1-5 p.m. Starts: Aug. 10. Continues through Aug. 29, 2014
