For more than ten years, the singer-songwriter known simply as Hayden has written gentle, acoustic folk-rock songs that seem to emanate from the whispering pines in his native Canada. But with this year's In Field & Town (released on Fat Possum Records), the singer pushes his quiet, deftly picked songs out of Nick Drake's shadow and uses fuzzy guitars and buzzy synthesizers to create some toe-tapping, head-bobbing music. Fans of M. Ward will warm to Hayden's worn, tattered voice, and the bucolic arrangements suggest a folksy, kitchen-sink mentality that never goes out of fashion with the indie set.
