Hank Jones

8 p.m. Friday, January 5. Lemp Neighborhood Arts Center (3301 Lemp Avenue).

Before it was all about posturing and popular fashion, hardcore was synonymous with fun and positivity — traits that Edinboro, Pennsylvania's Hank Jones is trying to bring back to the forefront. Although its new seven-inch is titled Hey Boys, There's Beer & Pizza in the Fridge...Love Mom, the band's music is anything but a joke. In fact, instead of relying on parody (like the hardcore goofs of Good Clean Fun), Hank Jones' lyrics often take on a personal bent and bring a fresh perspective to seasoned topics such as scene politics and social responsibility. Sure, the music is undeniably old-school-influenced, but Hank Jones' ability to avoid hardcore's machismo clichés make its two-minute anthems stirringly relevant. Plus, how can you hate on a band that has a song called "Pizza Party"?
