Going Downhill Fast

Ladies and gentlemen, find the highest hill, the most compact kid, the fastest car shell and start your engines. The St. Louis Jaycees are back with its annual Soap Box Derby competition, at which kids race gravity-powered cars down Macklind Avenue. The kids who win first and second place will have the opportunity to compete in the All American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio -- but will probably have to find a more efficient way to arrive rather than by natural forces. Make an afternoon of it by perusing antique vehicles at the classic car and motorcycle show and sampling food from area vendors. Plus, the city's chief of police is set to race against the fire chief to secure bragging rights -- and win the oil-can trophy. Derby runs take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today in the Hill neighborhood, at 5329 Columbia Avenue. Admission is free for spectators, and you can find more information at
