As the walls of blatant prejudice and discrimination regarding same-sex marriage continue to tumble, the happy marriage between writer Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas early in the previous century is more instructive and relevant than ever. These two women were profoundly in love and determined to lead their public lives in full accord with their private reality -- no closet on Earth could contain them. Their home in Paris, 27 rue de Fleurus, became the cultural center for a generation of expatriate artists such as Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Pablo Picasso. Ricky Ian Gordon and Royce Vavrek bring this era to life in their new opera, Twenty-Seven. Opera Theatre of Saint Louis presents the world-premiere performance of Twenty-Seven at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at the Loretto-Hilton Center on Webster University's campus (130 Edgar Road; 314-961-0644 or The show is performed five more times in repertory through Sunday, June 29.
