From Small to Large

John Garrett builds density out of the smallest particles. For his piece New Galaxy, the artist wove beads, washers, poker chips, bottle caps and "other odd round objects" on strands of brass and nickel wire to create a six-foot-by-five-foot wall hanging that looks like a futuristic map of the heavens. Cascade is linked loops of aluminum wire and glass beads that appear to be amorphous bubbles roiling in sheets of water from one angle, and a palimpsest sliding out of focus from another. John Garrett, the self-titled exhibition of his recent work, opens with a free public reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 25, at the Duane Reed Gallery (4729 McPherson Avenue; 314-361-4100 or The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, and Garrett's work remains up through Saturday, July 31.
