Frank Black

8 p.m. Tuesday, July 19. Old Rock House, 1200 South Seventh Street.

The bad news: Once again the Pixies is skipping St. Louis on its autumn tour. But even though we won't get the squalls of Black Francis, we will get an intimate solo show with his alter ego, Frank Black, and evidence that his musical identity goes far beyond being Kim Deal's bandmate. Black has no shortage of material to cull for his solo set: Black Paisley, his most recent collaboration with Reid Paley, is slated for release sometime this year – as is the second release by Grand Duchy, his duo with his wife Violet Clark. He's also remastered the 80-plus song catalog of his post-Pixies project, Frank Black and the Catholics. Not that he'll be sharing the stage with any of them. The indie elder statesman needs no help holding down a show on his own.
