Forever Plaid

Whether we arrived in America several generations or several days ago, all of us — with the exception of the Native American tribes — came here from somewhere else. It's only right and proper to pause at least once during the year to honor our faraway points of origin, their traditions and cultural markers. If you happen to be a local of Scottish American extraction, the time for such celebration is this Friday through Sunday (April 8 through 10) at the Missouri Tartan Day festivities in Frontier Park (South Main Street and First Capitol Drive, St. Charles). This plaid- and family-friendly party features food, live music, Highland dancing and the distinctively Scots-American custom of the Kirkin' o' the Tartans (i.e., the blessing of the various tartans and the families they represent; this ceremony isn't held in any churches in Scotland itself). Visit for more information on the free three-day event. P.S. Laddies, check your kilts in advance for moth holes.
