For Your Ears Only

The James Bond movies, especially those from the classic Sean Connery period, are a perfectly realized, self-contained universe of pure kitsch, and the accompanying iconic scores are the cherries on top. It’s hard to imagine any Bond flick without its score; the music -- brassy, brash and big -- pairs so well with the high-gloss ludicrousness on the screen. The brilliant John Barry composed and arranged the lion’s share of these pieces, along with an assortment of other A-listers like Bill Conti, Michael Kamen and even some guy named Paul McCartney (“Live and Let Die”). So how about hearing an evening of Bond music inside a premier concert hall instead of your average cineplex, with its dodgy acoustics and popcorn underfoot? The Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra’s got you covered as it performs a selection of primo J.B. themes from films like Goldfinger, From Russia With Love and Casino Royale. Michael Krajewski conducts the SLSO in Bond & Beyond tonight at 8 p.m. at Powell Hall (718 North Grand Boulevard; 314-534-1700 or Tickets are $25 to $57; debonair tuxedos not required.
