No, the other football

Still think women’s soccer is just a feel-good exercise for building girls’ self-esteem? The U.S. Women's National Team takes the pitch against Mexico tonight, clouded in controversy more appropriate for Melrose Place than the Disney Channel. At last month’s Women’s World Cup, coach Greg Ryan benched hotshot goalkeeper Hope Solo for the semifinal against Brazil in favor of veteran Briana Scurry. The United States lost that match 4-0, ending the team’s 51-game unbeaten streak. When Solo pointedly criticized Scurry and Ryan to the press after the game, her teammates essentially kicked Solo off of the team prior to the third-place game against Norway (a game the U.S. team won). Ouch! Drama aside, the Mexico friendly (soccer-talk for “exhibition game”) sees the triumphant homecoming of Nerinx Hall grad Lori Chalupny, who scored two goals in the World Cup. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Edward Jones Dome (Broadway and Washington Avenue; www.ussoccert.com), and tickets are $20 to $150 (call 314-241-1888 or visit www.ticketmaster.com).
