Filling in the Blank

Can crazy cars cure conformity?

Harrod Blank has covered vehicles in cameras and growing grass; he's built an over- and underground arts center in the desert dedicated to film, custom cars and Mexican shrines to the dead; and he's authored books on the subject of art cars. Why? Because Blank believes the world is falling prey to a mass-produced mentality that homogenizes our culture and our thinking, and the only way to fight back is through unfettered imagination. David Silberberg explores the creative vision and artistic journey of Blank in the documentary Oh My God! It's Harrod Blank! (The title is a reference to Blank's first art-car creation, a '65 VW painted to look like a beach ball with a TV mounted on the roof and plastic-fruit bumpers, which was named Oh My God! in honor of the response most people had upon seeing it.) The Webster Film Series screens Oh My God! It's Harrod Blank! at 8 p.m. this evening at Webster University's Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood Avenue; 314-968-7487 or www.webster.edu/filmseries). Tickets are $5 to $6.
