Fill in the Blanks

For many artists the blank canvas is an object of terror: What are you supposed to do with all that space? Approaching that empty expanse can also be an optimistic moment: What can't you do with all that space? But if you're an artist and you don't have any canvases, you're in trouble. The Luminary Studios comes to the aid of artists lacking materials, specifically homeless teenage artists, by offering a place to work and the media necessary to create. To keep the program running, Luminary Studios needs your help: The Blank Canvas Art Program Fundraiser offers you the opportunity to mingle at the Mad Art Gallery (2727 South 12th Street; www.theluminaryarts.com) from 7 to 11 p.m., and enjoy some snacks, visit the cash bar, bid in a silent auction, and hear the music of Blind the Mute (pictured) and Yellow Dog. In return for all this entertainment, you pay $15 at the door, or donate at least $20 worth of art supplies — all of which will be used by grateful artists when they tackle their next blank canvas.
