Fast Films

There's a certain cachet to being in the movie business. It's a glamorous life, filled with beautiful people, exotic locales and glitz — mountains of glitz. But the filmmakers who compete in the St. Louis Film Race will do without most of that glitz, as they'll be up against a savage deadline. Each team will write, shoot and edit a four-minute movie between 10 p.m. Friday and 10 p.m. Saturday, using a theme and a specific action or plot point dictated by the Film Racing Tour. Why? Because it forces participants to completely disconnect their internal editor — and its attendant nagging little voice that questions every creative decision — and just make something. A little trepidation and desperation can result in prodigious leaps of inspiration, which is much more useful than glitz when it's crunch time. Finished films are screened at 7 p.m. at the Tivoli Theatre (6350 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-995-6270 or Tickets are $9, and the top films from other cities competing in the tour will also be shown.
