And so the debate rages on: Eric Clapton is God — on that much we can all agree — but God of what? Roots rock, as ushered in by his groups the Yardbirds and John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers? The psychedelic guitarwork pioneered by Cream? The adult-contemporary pop of his recent solo years? And is Derek and the Dominos' "Bell Bottom Blues," in fact, the single saddest song ever written? Clapton may believe he don't belong here in heaven, and he may have long pined for his "Layla," but it's Slowhand's lasting legacy that has us mere mortals down on our knees.
