Eat for the Cause

On the morning of August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the Gulf Coast as a Category 3 storm. Those are the simple numbers, the straightforward facts. But the reality — even now, more than two and a half years on — is painfully complicated for countless families. Many homes are gone. Many jobs have yet to return. Nonprofit groups such as Common Ground Relief have stepped in and stepped up by providing both short- and long-term assistance for victims of Gulf Coast hurricanes — and you, in turn, can assist Common Ground by attending Bayou Bash 2 today from 12:30 to 7 p.m. Held at the awesome south-side eatery Iron Barley (5510 Virginia Avenue), the Bash includes live music (from bands like the Bottoms Up Blues Gang, pictured), a street dance, an art auction, Cajun delicacies from chef Tom Coghill and a special list of "swamp-water drinks." Your $10 donation helps Common Ground continue its vital mission of rebuilding homes and lives. For more information call the restaurant at 314-351-4500 or visit www.commongroundrelief.org.
