Driving in A Winter Wonderland

Winter Wonderland in Tilles Park (9551 Litzsinger Road, Ladue; www.stlouisco.com/parksandrecreation) might just be the most fun you'll ever have at a snail's pace. Here you thought the Christmas season was all about mad dashes hither and yon in a rush to get everything on your long to-do list accomplished. All that running around can wear a body out; it's best to slow down, breathe in and out and enjoy the yuletide. Winter Wonderland, now in its 28th year, facilitates all those good things. The premise couldn't be simpler: Stay in your vehicle and drive, very slowly, through the elaborate lights and displays in the park (rates start at $10 per family vehicle) -- or better yet, go on Saturday night when the park is reserved for horse-drawn carriage rides only (beginning at $65 for four people). Either way you slice your fruitcake, you're going to have a blessedly relaxing time. There's a reason this ramble through prettily illuminated Tilles Park is such a beloved St. Louis tradition -- it's a restorative dram of uncomplicated charm. Winter Wonderland is open every night through Wednesday, January 1, 2014, with the notable exceptions of Tuesday, December 24, and Tuesday, December 31.
