Driver, 8, Takes a Break

by

Owing to a series of violent altercations that are not germane to the current topic, Mr. Night is a devout pedestrian. As such, he notices that most drivers in St. Louis are — how to phrase this delicately — idiots. You have no idea what a stop sign is, what the rule is for a crosswalk (here's a clue: It doesn't involve speeding up) or how to use your own car's turn signals. Toddler Traffic Town at the Magic House (516 South Kirkwood Road, Kirkwood; 314-822-8900 or www.magichouse.org) is a much-needed effort to educate drivers before they are drivers; a scale-model version of St. Louis, complete with Gateway Arch, provides a safe area for kids to learn the rules of the road in pedal cars. Teach them safety and courtesy now, and it will be internalized by the time they're old enough to drive. And then maybe pedestrians will be safe. Toddler Traffic Town is open through Sunday, October 8, and admission is free with the standard $7 Magic House fee.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: Aug. 29. Continues through Oct. 8
