We've noticed something: St. Louis music fans are passionate and prone to arguing like hell. But we're going to be hard-line and not brook any debate about the merit of a music documentary called Sound City
. Dave Grohl directed the 2013 film, and here's the inarguable lowdown -- if you love recorded rock & roll you have to see it. Sound City was the California studio where a who's who of famous clients recorded so many stone-classic albums we'd need four times our available word count to list them all. A tiny sample: Neil Young's After the Gold Rush
; Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Damn the Torpedoes
; and Nirvana's Nevermind
. As part of the A Film Series venture, catch Sound City
at 7 p.m. in the Crown Room of Schlafly Bottleworks (7260 Southwest Avenue, Maplewood; 314-241-2337 or www.afilmseries.com
). Admission is a suggested $6 donation.
