Deep-Dish Dance

A dance performance is a tricky thing. In a play, characters can emote through their voices, actually act the action. Dancers often must convey all of the same using only the intensity of their performance: the nuance of an arm or leg placement, the quickness (or slowness) of tempo, the excruciatingly long hold of a pose or the fast-paced, frenetic movement that counters it. When done well, it's a captivating marriage of the physical and the emotional. Enter River North Chicago Dance Company. Known for jazz-based contemporary pieces, the acclaimed troupe combines athletic prowess and artistic perspective with bold, theatrical flair. Check it out for yourself when the company, celebrating its twentieth season, brings its signature style to the Touhill Center for the Performing Arts (1 University Drive at Natural Bridge Road; 314-516-4949 or as the guests of Dance St. Louis. Performances are held at 8 p.m. Friday and 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday (February 26 and 27), and tickets are $30 to $50.
