Deal of Two Lifetimes

Faust is an old man apart, alone in his despondence. He dedicated his life to science and philosophy and now finds their rewards unsatisfying. Determined to kill himself and end the misery of life, he's stopped by Mephistopheles, who offers him anything he wants. Faust only wants to be young again, a wish that comes with a condition: Mephistopheles will make him young now, but when Faust dies he'll be a servant in hell. Hesitant to take the deal, the devil tempts Faust with visions of the lovely Marguerite. Faust takes the deal and begins his pursuit of the young beauty with Mephistopheles as his wingman. Charles Gounod's opera Faust adapts the first half of Goethe's Faust, transforming the tale into a supernatural romance with the highest of stakes. Winter Opera St. Louis presents Gounod's Faust at 8 p.m. Friday, November 8, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, November 10, in the Skip Viragh Center for the Arts on Chaminade's campus (425 South Lindbergh Boulevard, Frontenac; 314-865-0038 or www.winteroperastl.org). Tickets are $36 to $51.
